Nintendo Switch Sports Resort Island Crown Guide: Ranks, Champions and Legends
How Island Crown works in Nintendo Switch Sports Resort: a separate ladder per sport, an Island Champion to beat, then a Legend. What is confirmed and what is not.
Last updated:
Island Crown is Nintendo Switch Sports Resort's offline progression system, and it runs per sport rather than per save file. You climb ranks inside one sport, beat that sport's Island Champion, and then face an Island Legend. Nintendo has described the structure but has not published how many ranks each sport has.
Source note: The mode structure here comes from Nintendo's official product page and launch-week news posts as of October 2026. Rank counts are marked Unknown because no official page states them.
What Island Crown actually is
Three things separate it from online play:
| Island Crown | Pro League (online) | |
|---|---|---|
| Where it runs | Offline, against CPU opponents | Online, against other players |
| What it tracks | Rank progress inside one sport | A ranked ladder shared across players |
| What it unlocks | Champion and Legend challenges in that sport | Seasonal standing |
| Needs Nintendo Switch Online | No | Yes |
It is the single-player answer to "what do I do when nobody else is in the room", which is why it sits at the centre of the game rather than as a side mode.
The ladder, step by step
- Pick one sport. Progress is stored per sport, so spreading your time across all 12 slows every ladder down at once.
- Win matches to climb. The rank rises as you beat the CPU opponents the game puts in front of you.
- Reach the top of the ladder. At the top rank for that sport, the Island Champion becomes available.
- Beat the Island Champion. This is the gate; until it falls, the Legend tier stays locked.
- Face an Island Legend. The highest tier in the mode, described by Nintendo as sitting above the Champion.
The number of steps between your first match and the Champion is Unknown. Nintendo has not published rank counts, and we will not guess a number that a reader can check in ten minutes.
What is confirmed, and what is not
| Claim | Status | Basis |
|---|---|---|
| Island Crown is a per-sport offline ladder | Confirmed | Official product description |
| Each sport has an Island Champion | Confirmed | Official description names the Champion |
| A Legend tier exists above the Champion | Confirmed | Official description names the Legend |
| Number of ranks per sport | Unknown | Not in any official material |
| Whether ranks carry across Sportsmate and Mii saves | Unknown | Not addressed officially |
Why it matters more than the online ladder
Online play needs a Nintendo Switch Online membership, and it puts you against people who have already played for months. Island Crown needs neither: it is the mode a family actually finishes, and it is where Spocco Points accumulate fastest if you keep replaying one sport.
That also makes it the cheapest way to unlock equipment early. Every match pays Spocco Points regardless of mode, so a Crown run on a sport you are already good at is the least frustrating way to fund your first Item Center purchases.
Common mistakes
- Treating it as one ladder. Twelve separate ladders means the Champion of Bowling does not help you in Archery.
- Skipping the warm-up. Jump Rope is a warm-up activity, not one of the 12 sports, so it has no Crown ladder of its own.
- Waiting for online friends. Crown is offline. If you are waiting for a lobby, you are not progressing it.
Does Island Crown work offline in Nintendo Switch Sports Resort?
Yes. Island Crown is the offline single-player ladder. Online play, including the ranked Pro League, requires a Nintendo Switch Online membership, but Island Crown does not.
How many ranks does each sport have in Nintendo Switch Sports Resort?
Unknown. Nintendo describes the ladder, the Island Champion and the Legend tier but has not published a rank count for any sport. We will add the real numbers once they can be counted in-game.
Is Island Crown progress shared between sports in Nintendo Switch Sports Resort?
No. Progress is tracked per sport, so beating the Bowling ladder does not advance your Archery rank.
Do I need to beat the Island Champion to reach the Legend in Nintendo Switch Sports Resort?
Yes. The Champion is the gate: the Legend tier only opens after the Champion for that sport is beaten.
Does Island Crown give Spocco Points in Nintendo Switch Sports Resort?
Yes. Every mode pays Spocco Points, so Crown matches fund Item Center purchases the same way online matches do.
