Sword Fighting in Nintendo Switch Sports Resort: Why Chambara Is Not in the Game
Sword fighting, or Chambara, is not one of the 12 sports in Nintendo Switch Sports Resort. Here is the confirmed lineup and what replaced it on Switch 2.
Last updated:
Sword fighting is not in Nintendo Switch Sports Resort. Chambara — the swordplay mode that appeared in Wii Sports Resort (2009) and returned in Nintendo Switch Sports (2022) — does not appear in Nintendo's published list of 12 sports for the Switch 2 game. No official page, trailer, or press release for this title mentions swordplay, kendo, or Chambara.
Source note: Sport mechanics and prices on this page come from Nintendo's official product page and our own testing notes as of October 2026. Items marked Unverified could not be reproduced or confirmed in-game — treat them as community reports rather than settled facts.

What the official 12-sport lineup contains
Nintendo's own product page and overview materials list exactly these sports. There is no second list, and no hidden mode has been announced.
| # | Sport | Control style |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Boxing | Motion punches, guard and counter |
| 2 | Bowling | Swing, plus twist for spin |
| 3 | Archery | Draw and aim, wind affects the shot |
| 4 | Tennis | Swing as a racket |
| 5 | Table Tennis | Quick shots, varied spin |
| 6 | Volleyball | Serve, set, spike |
| 7 | Basketball | Dribble, pass, shoot |
| 8 | Golf | Swing strength changes the shot |
| 9 | Thumb Wrestling | Hold to grow your thumb, pin for 3 seconds |
| 10 | Skateboarding | Joy-Con 2 mouse controls |
| 11 | Power Cruising | Tilt to steer, twist to boost |
| 12 | Prop Plane | Tilt to fly, shoot balloons |
Jump Rope is also in the game, but as a warm-up activity rather than one of the 12.
Where the sword fighting expectation comes from
The confusion is understandable, because swordplay has been in this series twice:
| Game | Year | Sword mode | Platform |
|---|---|---|---|
| Wii Sports Resort | 2009 | Swordplay (Chambara) | Wii |
| Nintendo Switch Sports | 2022 | Chambara | Nintendo Switch |
| Nintendo Switch Sports Resort | 2026 | Not in the confirmed lineup | Nintendo Switch 2 |
Both earlier games rewarded timing over raw swinging speed, which is why players remember the mode fondly. Players who duelled on the beach in 2009 reasonably assumed the resort setting would bring it back. Nintendo has not said why it is absent, and we are not going to invent a reason.
What to play instead
If what you want is close-range, timing-based combat, two confirmed sports fill that gap:
- Boxing uses motion punches and, according to Nintendo's own description, different punches to work toward a knockout. It is the only head-to-head striking sport in the lineup.
- Thumb Wrestling is new and entirely about a pressure contest: hold your thumb down to make it bigger and stronger, then pin your opponent for three seconds.
Neither is a sword duel, but both are direct competition rather than score attack, which is what Chambara players tend to be looking for.
Could it be added later?
Unknown, and we will not guess. Nintendo has not described the 12-sport lineup as final for post-launch updates, and it has not promised additional sports either. Two things would change this page:
- An official Nintendo announcement naming a new sport.
- The sport appearing in the game's own menu after a patch, which we would record with the patch number and date.
Until one of those happens, this page stays a "not in the game" answer rather than a guide.
How to check this yourself
You do not have to take our word for it:
- Open the official product page and read the "12 motion-control sports" description, which names the sports it includes.
- Watch the official overview trailer and count the sport icons in the selection menu.
- Search Nintendo's news feed for "Sports Resort" plus "sword" — the result is coverage of the 2022 game, not this one.
FAQ
Does Nintendo Switch Sports Resort have sword fighting?
No. It is not among the 12 confirmed sports, and no official material mentions Chambara or kendo.
Is Chambara the same as sword fighting?
Yes — Chambara is the name Nintendo used for the swordplay mode in Wii Sports Resort and Nintendo Switch Sports. It is not in this game.
Why do some videos show sword fighting with this game's name?
Those clips are of Nintendo Switch Sports (2022), which does have Chambara. Search results for the two titles overlap heavily because the names are similar.
Will sword fighting be added in an update?
Unknown. Nintendo has neither confirmed nor ruled out additional sports. This page will be updated with a date if that changes.
